Chapter 6: Capacity and Deployment Planning
compute cluster node contains both the Excel Services WFE components and the application server Excel
Calculation Services components. A collection of compute cluster nodes creates a CCS compute cluster.
All of the nodes share a SQL Server 2005 configuration and content database. A separate server (referred
to as the CCS head node ) hosts the compute cluster scheduler, which will schedule and load balance jobs
across the nodes in the CCS compute cluster. Figure 6-7 shows an HPC topology.
A CCS deployment with Excel Services is best suited for scenarios where calculation-intensive operations
can be performed in parallel. Each ECS on the compute cluster nodes works in isolation on the jobs it
receives from the scheduler. You can find more information about Windows CCS 2003 at www.microsoft
