Chapter 12: Business Intelligence Solutions
Business Intelligence
As discussed in Chapter 1, Excel is often used in business intelligence (BI) solutions. It is a primary
tool for data analysis and reporting. In this chapter, you learn how you can use Excel Services with
Office SharePoint Server features to build BI solutions that extend from the client to the server. To
do this, you use Excel and Office SharePoint Server with Excel Services to build two primary BI
constructs: reporting portals and dashboards.
This chapter discusses the functionality that supports building these BI solutions. In particular,
you learn about the following:
The Report Center
Report libraries
Key performance indicator (KPI) lists
Building and using dashboards
Building BI solutions outside of the Report Center

Office SharePoint Server includes an out-of-the-box site template called Report Center. In fact,
when you first install the server, a Report Center called Reports is provisioned for you as a
toplevel site. This template provides you with a great starting point for creating your BI portal. It
includes the following common elements of such portals:
A report library with templates for report and dashboard content type
