Working with SQL Server Analysis Services
Connecting to Analysis Services from Excel
In this section, you create an Excel workbook that will be the basis for the dashboard. First, you create a
data connection file and save it in the DCL on your server. This way, you can reuse that connection later
to quickly author workbooks connected to the same data source. You also use this connection to create a
KPI and a filter that are connected to Analysis Services.
In the following Try It Out, you use Excel to create the data connection file and save it to the server.
Try It Out Creating a Data Connection Definition
To create a data connection file, follow these steps:
Open the Excel 2007 application.
Switch to the Data tab on the Ribbon.
Create a data connection to Analysis Services by selecting From Analysis Services on the From
Other Sources drop-down menu, as shown in Figure 12-19.
