You can also use a lookup table for non-numeric data. Figure 16-15 shows a lookup table that is used to assign a
region to a state.
The two-column lookup table is in the range D2:E52. The formula in cell B2, which was copied to the cells be-
low, is
=VLOOKUP(A2,$D$2:$E$52,2,FALSE)
A side benefit is that the VLOOKUP function will return false if an exact match is not
found — a good way to spot misspelled states. Using FALSE as the last argument in the
function indicates than exact match is required.
