Working with Dates: Dates Are Numbers Too
Excel is well stocked with additional ways to format dates:
Click that January 15 entry
in cell A3.
Then click what’s called the Number
Format drop-down menu (see Figure
5–63). This menu shows you what
A3—which again is really 40193—
would look like as per some of
Excel’s other formatting options.
Click the second Date
option on the menu, and
A3 will then display
1/15/11, replacing the

If you click the More Number Formats… options at the bottom of the menu,
you’ll be returned to the trusty Format Cells dialog box, this time with the
Date option already selected (see Figure 5–64).
