6.6 ANOVA
In this section, we will use ANOVA to find what are known as main and interac-
tion effects of categorical (nominal) independent variables on an interval, dependent
variable. The main effect of an independent variable is the direct effect it exerts on
a dependent variable. The interaction effect is a bit more complex. It is the effect
that results from the joint interactions of two or more independent variables on a
dependent variable. Determining the effects of independent variables on dependent
variables is quite similar to the analysis we performed in the section above. In that
