Creating your own date and time formats
And type the following formula into cell A3:
=A2–A1
If you use the Custom category on the Number tab of the Format Cells dialog box (press
Ctrl+1) to apply the built-in format [h]:mm:ss to cell A3, the result of the formula is
58:27:00—the total elapsed time between the two dates, as shown in Figure 15-5. If you
apply the standard h:mm:ss format to cell A3 instead, the result is 10:27:00—the difference
between the two times of day. Without the elapsed-time-format code brackets [ ], Excel
ignores the difference in dates.
