Using Formulas to Join Text
The new Flash Fill feature discussed in Chapter 2 , Flash Fill and Quick
Analysis, enables you to join text without using any formulas. By
providing a few examples for Excel, you can replace a confusing combination
of concatenations. However, Flash Fill creates a one-time snapshot. With
formulas, the results change as the source columns change. You can also do
some things with formulas that Flash Fill doesn t do.
You use the ampersand (&) operator when you need to join text. In Excel, the &
operator is known as the concatenation operator.
For example, the formula =A2&B2 joins the text values shown in the two
cells A2 and B2, as shown in Figure 9.6 .
