A list validation
WISH YOU COULD REUSE YOUR LIST ELSEWHERE? MAKE IT A TEMPLATE
Let’s say that you customized the heck out of a list. You added a lot of cool calculated fields, did a
lot of field validation, and so on. You know that that list would be useful elsewhere, and you aren’t
looking forward to re-creating it later, when you create subsites.
Well, you don’t necessarily have to do so. You can make a list template (as Contacts and Tasks are)
out of a list. It will become available on the Create page just like all the other templates and will
be stored in the List Templates gallery for the site collection. There are some caveats; for example,
templates can’t hold on to security settings. Also, any lookup fields that reference another list won’t
work if that list doesn’t exist where the template is going to be applied.
Lists can be made into templates with or without content. That is, you can save only the design or
save the design with the data as well. Templates usually have a 50MB size limit (although that can be
increased to 500MB at the command line), so it is often better to simply save a list template without data.
That is also the case if any of the data was confidential or was protected with specific permissions.
