Then, to apply the template, just go to the Create page. It will be listed there (mine is under
Communications, since it’s based on the Contacts list). If you hover your mouse pointer over
the template’s name, your description will be displayed.
Lists can also be downloaded from the List Template Gallery (which is just a library) and then
uploaded to List Template Galleries of other site collections as well. The list template files make
decent backups. Just remember that anything that was linked via lookup won’t work, and
permission settings will be wiped.
Also note that even though SharePoint is moving away from .STP (SharePoint Template Package),
list templates are still saved in that format.
Connecting Lists: The Insert Related List Tool
At this point, you have a Customers list that contains the contact information for your customers.
You also have a Sales list that contains sales orders for those customers. The customers can (and
ideally do) place more than one sales order, but each order can have only one customer. And each
single list item in the Customers list is a record of a customer. So, you have a common customer
field (Company) between the two lists, linking them. One list is the parent , or has one record per
value, and the other is the child , or can have multiple records with the same common value.
As long as they have a field in common, you can connect the web parts of two lists to filter
the view of one with the selected record of the other; synchronizing their data makes them both
more useful. This helps list view web parts be more dynamic, allowing users to capitalize on the
commonalities among the data of the site’s lists right on the home page (or any other web part
