9. For my example, leave the default in place.
Master Page Setting for Application _Layouts Pages When enabled (the default), the _
Layouts page reference queries the master pages for the site. This applies to every site and
site collection in the web application, so disabling this setting will radically change the
appearance of these sites (assuming they had customized master pages). But if you have a
problem with corrupt or badly modified master pages, this is a quick way to disable them
all, preventing site administrators from using master pages.
10. For the example, leave the default in place.
Recycle Bin You can customize the Recycle Bin for the entire web application. These
changes apply to every site collection and site in the web application. You can adjust how
long items sit in the end-user Recycle Bin and the second-stage Recycle Bin before
deletion, set the Recycle Bins to never delete anything automatically, or disable the Recycle
Bins completely.
11. My example leaves the defaults in place. Items can be left in the Recycle Bin for 30 days
before they are deleted, and the second-stage Recycle Bin is set at 50 percent of the site
quota. This means the second-stage Recycle Bin adds 50 percent of the site collection’s
quota to the space taken in the content database.
Maximum Upload Size This is the maximum amount that can be uploaded in a single
process to the web application. This limit applies to any single file upload or any group of
files being uploaded together. For example, if you’re using the Explorer view to copy and
paste 50 documents to a document library in one go, you’ll need to make sure the combined
size of the files is less than this limit. If you’re planning to transfer a large amount of data to
a SharePoint site, you should first increase this limit and then decrease it when you’re done.
12. My example leaves the default of MB in place. Apply the maximum upload size that is 50
appropriate for your environment.
Customer Experience Improvement Program If you decide you want SharePoint to
collect analytical data for the CEIP program, here is where you turn it on. It is the same
setting that you see during the creation of a new web application.
13. I’m going to leave it turned off.
When you’re done configuring the general settings, click OK. You will be taken back to the
Web Applications Management page.

This version of SharePoint has some nice features for controlling performance, one of which is
resource throttling . With SharePoint, one of the biggest bottlenecks is with large lists—both lists
with a large number of items and those with a large number of fields. Whenever a large list is
queried, it slows the entire content database down for everyone else. And that content database
could be hosting every site collection in the web application. Resource throttling ensures that
such large queries don’t get out of hand. Resource Throttling is an option in the drop-down
menu for the General Settings, and clicking it opens the page shown in Figure 10.35.
