already been used. The default zone is being used by the main URL (http://spf2:8080
in my example), so it’s not an available choice. After you’re done creating this extended
web application, the Internet zone is no longer available should you ever choose to extend
the existing web application again. Keep in mind that this means you can only have four
extended web applications per web application.
7. Once you’ve configured the extended web application the way you like, click OK.
SharePoint will extend the web application to the new IIS Web Site (no need to add any
site collections). If you have DNS set up to point the URL to the server, browsing to it
will show the same site, but with a new URL in the address bar and the corrected links
and paths displayed on the page. So, performing the same search will provide the same
results with the new URL. See Figure 10.72.

Unlike browsing to http://spf2:8080, using this new URL will require authentication
because anonymous access was disabled for the new IIS Web Site.

You can see what changes occurred in IIS from extending a website by going into Internet
Information Services (IIS) Manager and checking out the newly created Blogs Outside IIS Web Site.
Select the new IIS Web Site, and click Bindings in the Actions pane to verify that it is
listening on port 80. This will also show the expected host header. Click Basic Settings to see that it
is using the same application pool as the original IIS Web Site (SharePoint-8080). This means
all traffic bound for this new IIS Web Site will be directed to the same content database as
traffic bound for the original SharePoint-8080 Web Site. Clicking application pools on the left side
of the IIS console, then selecting the SharePoint-8080 Application Pool, and clicking the View
