The Site Use

This is another page that focuses on controlling the growth of site collections. Here is where you
can create storage-limit templates for site collections. (Although SharePoint says sites, it means
site collections.) A storage quota template can be selected as the default for site collections (useful
for self-service sites), or they can also be applied to each site collection specifically. If you click the
Quota Templates link, it will take you to a page with two sections: Template Name and Storage
As you can see in Figure 11.17, you should enter a template name in the Template Name section.
In the Storage Limit Values section, specify the maximum size in megabytes that the site
collection can take up in the content database. When the site collection hits that maximum, SharePoint
will lock the site collection, prevent the addition of new content, and refuse all changes to that
site—although it will allow you to delete things until the site collection falls beneath the maximum
limit. (Do not forget to empty the end-user Recycle Bin.) You can also set a warning level; when the
specified number of megabytes is reached, a warning email will be sent to the site collection
owners so that they can act preemptively before the maximum is reached. When a site collection contact
receives notification that it is reaching its limit, make sure they take it seriously. There is also a
section for specifying a quota for sandboxed solutions per site collection. 300 points is a good general
default, but you can set a different amount. Solutions that exceed that are disabled for the day and a
notification can be sent. You can make as many templates as you’d like to apply to different site
collection situations. See Chapter 10 for more details about quotas.

The Site Collection Quotas And Locks page does two things:
It lets you apply a quota template to a site collection or apply a custom quota to the site
flection, instead of applying an existing quota template.
It shows you the lock status of a given site collection and allows you to change it.
