Changing Column Widths
Changing Column Widths
Columns that are too wide for the material they contain can make a table hard to read.
You can change a column’s width by dragging the column’s right border to a new
position. Or, if you prefer, you can double-click a column border to make the column width
adjust automatically to accommodate the widest entry in the column. To adjust the
width of all the columns to match their widest entries, click anywhere in the table, click
the AutoFit button in the Cell Size group on the Table Tools Layout tab, and then click
AutoFit Contents. To adjust the width of the entire table to span the width of the page,
click the AutoFit Contents button and then click AutoFit Window.
You will adjust the columns in Robin’s table by double-clicking the right column border.
You need to start by making sure that no part of the table is selected. Otherwise, when you
double-click the border, only the width of the selected part of the table will change.
To change the width of the columns in the table:
1. Verify that no part of the table is selected, and then position the mouse pointer
over the right border of the Labor Cost column until the pointer changes to
.

2. Double-click the mouse button. The right column border moves left so that the
Labor Costs column is just wide enough to accommodate the widest entry in the
column.
To change the height of a
row, position the mouse
pointer over the bottom
row border and drag the
border up or down.
3. Click any cell in the table, click the AutoFit button in the Cell Size group, and
then click AutoFit Contents . The table columns adjust so that each is just wide
enough to accommodate its widest entry. The text “Weather stripping and
insulation” in the bottom left cell no longer wraps to a second line.
To fi nish the table, you will add some formatting to improve the table’s appearance.
