Formatting Tables with Styles
Word includes a variety of built-in table styles that you can use to add shading, color,
borders, and other design elements with a single click. You can choose a style that includes
different formatting for the header row than for the rest of the table. Or you can choose a
style that instead applies different formatting to the fi rst column , or header column (that is,
the far-left column, which sometimes contains headers that identify the type of information
in each row). Some styles format the rows in alternating colors, called banded rows , while
others format the columns in alternating colors, called banded columns .
You select a table style from the Table Styles group on the Table Tools Design tab,
which displays a selection of table styles. To see the complete collection, click the More
button in the Table Styles group to open the Table Styles gallery. When you move your
mouse pointer over a table style, a Live Preview of it appears in the table in the
document. After you apply a table style, you can modify elements of it by selecting or
deselecting the check boxes in the Table Style Options group on the Table Tools Design tab.
Formatting a Table with a Table Style
• Click in the table you want to format, and then click the Table Tools Design tab.
• In the Table Styles group, click the More button to display the Table Styles gallery.
• Position the mouse pointer over a style in the Table Styles gallery to see a Live Preview
of the table style in the document.
• In the Table Styles gallery, click the style you want.
• To apply or remove style elements (such as special formatting for the header row,
banded rows, or banded columns), select or deselect check boxes as necessary in the
Table Style Options group.
Robin wants to use a table style that emphasizes the header row with special
formatting, does not include column borders, and uses color to separate the rows.
To apply a table style to the Probable Expenditures table:
1. Click anywhere in the table, and then click the Table Tools Design tab. In the
Table Styles group, the plain black-and-white grid style is highlighted, indicating
that it is the table’s current style. See Figure 3-16.
