With the data reformatted, Tom can more easily see that the company sold 1038 more
units in 2012 than in 2011β€”an increase of 3.44 percent, which increased revenue by
$61,224.10, or 7.02 percent. This was not uniform across all sales regions. Total units
sold and revenue for Region R05, for example, decreased between 2011 and 2012.
Formatting Dates and Times
The date in the Documentation sheet is displayed in an abbreviated format, yyyy . dd/
Tom wants you to use an extended format that includes the day of the week, the full
month name, the day, and the year.
Because Excel stores dates and times as numbers and not as text, you can apply
different formats without affecting the date and time value. The abbreviated format entered
into the Documentation sheet is referred to as the Short Date format. You can also apply
a Long Date format that displays the day of the week and the full month name in
addition to the day of the month and the year. Other built-in Excel formats include formats
for displaying time values in 12- or 24-hour time.
You will change the date in the Documentation sheet to the Long Date format.
To format the date in the Long Date format:
1. Click the Documentation sheet tab to make the Documentation worksheet active,
and then select cell .
2. In the Number group on the Home tab, click the Number Format arrow, and
then click Long Date . The date format changes to show the weekday name,
month name, day, and year. See Figure 2-12.
