Database management software lets you collect and manage data. A database is a
collection of information stored on one or more computers organized in a uniform
format of records and fi elds. A record is a collection of data items in a database. A fi eld is
one piece of information in the record. Data is the actual information in a fi eld. A
familiar example of a database is the online catalog of books at a library; the catalog contains
one record for each book in the library, and each record contains fi elds that identify the
title, the author, and the subjects under which the book can be classifi ed.
Graphics software allows you to create illustrations, diagrams, graphs, and charts.
Most application software allows you to include graphics that you can create
yourself using graphics software, such as Microsoft Paint or Adobe Illustrator CS2. You can
also use clip art , simple drawings that are included as collections with many software
Presentation software allows you to display or project graphics and other
information to a group, print them for quick reference, or transmit them to remote computers.
Figure 29 shows a slide from a presentation created in Microsoft PowerPoint—a popular
presentation software program used to create colorful presentations.
