Touring the Windows 7 Desktop
To select a menu command:
1. Click the Start button
on the taskbar.
2. Point to All Programs on the Start menu. The All Programs command is
highlighted to indicate it is selected. After a short pause, the All Programs list opens.

3. Click the Start button
on the taskbar to close the Start menu.
In addition to clicking an object to select it, you can double-click an object to open or
start the item associated with it. For example, you can double-click a folder icon to open
the folder and see its contents. (A folder is a container that helps to organize the contents
of your computer, such as ﬁ les and folders.) Or you can double-click a program icon to
start the program. Double-clicking means clicking the left mouse button twice in quick
Elena suggests that you have students practice double-clicking by opening the Recycle
Bin. The Recycle Bin holds deleted items until you remove them permanently.
To view the contents of the Recycle Bin:
1. Click the desktop to clear any selections, and then point to the Recycle Bin icon
on the desktop. A ScreenTip appears that describes the Recycle Bin.
2. Click the left mouse button twice quickly to double-click the Recycle Bin icon. The
Recycle Bin window opens, as shown in Figure 4.
