What is Publisher?
Quick tour of Publisher 2010
Before you can completely understand the capabilities of Publisher, you need to understand
the components of the program. Let’s begin by taking a quick tour of the Publisher interface.
Choose Start > Programs > Microsoft Oi ce > Microsoft Publisher 2010.
Backstage view of Publisher 2010.
Publisher 2010 opens in Backstage view, where you can create a new publication, open
an existing publication, and view featured content from Oi ce.com . Backstage view is
described in more detail in the next section.
You can always access Backstage view, even when working on a publication, by clicking
the File tab.
Backstage view is new to Oi ce 2010. Some of the user interface elements, such as the Ribbon
and Navigation pane, were introduced in previous versions.
Publisher 2010 components
The Publisher 2010 interface has the following main components:
• The Ribbon: This bar across the top of the interface contains several tabs. These tabs
contain groups of commands, which are visible on all tabs except File.
• Backstage view: This view, which appears by default when you launch Publisher 2010,
displays a group of commands on the Ribbon’s File tab.
The File tab always has a colored background, even when it is not the active tab. This may be
confusing, so just remember that you can identify the active tab by the borders on either side of it.
