Refer to Figure 98-1 and enter the following array formula in row 4. Then copy it to the cells

below it. The result will be exactly the same as using the RANK.AVG function.

=SUM(1*(B4<=Sales))-(SUM(1*(B5=Sales))-1)/2

An
array
formula is a special type of formula that works with internal arrays of data.

When you enter an array formula, you must press Ctrl+Shift+Enter (not just Enter) to

indicate that it’s an array formula. Excel displays curly braces around the formula to

remind you that it’s an array formula. If you don’t press Ctrl+Shift+Enter, the formula

will not work.
