Calculating Roots

If you need to calculate the square root of a value, use the SQRT function. The following formula,

for example, calculates the square root of the value in cell A1:

=SQRT(A1)

What about other roots? You won’t find a CUBEROOT function, and there certainly isn’t a

FOURTHROOT function. The trick is to raise the number to the (1/root) power. For example, to

calculate the cube root of the value in cell A1, use this formula:

=A1^(1/3)

To calculate the fourth root, use this formula:

=A1^(1/4)
