Calculating Roots
Calculating Roots
If you need to calculate the square root of a value, use the SQRT function. The following formula,
for example, calculates the square root of the value in cell A1:
=SQRT(A1)
What about other roots? You won’t find a CUBEROOT function, and there certainly isn’t a
FOURTHROOT function. The trick is to raise the number to the (1/root) power. For example, to
calculate the cube root of the value in cell A1, use this formula:
=A1^(1/3)
To calculate the fourth root, use this formula:
=A1^(1/4)
