Saving a file for use with an older version of Excel
Saving a file for use with an older version of Excel
To save a file for use with an older version of Excel, choose File
Save As and select one of these
options from the Save As Type drop-down list:
h Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls): If the file will be used by someone who has Excel 97,
Excel 2000, Excel 2002, or Excel 2003
h Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook (*.xls): If the file will be used by someone who has
Excel 5 or Excel 95
When you save a file by using one of these file formats, Excel displays its Compatibility Checker
dialog box. This dialog box lists all potential compatibility problems.
If the workbook will be used only by someone who has installed the Office
Compatibility Pack, you don’t need to save it by using an earlier file format. However,
it’s a good idea to run the Compatibility Checker to make sure that you’re not using
features that aren’t supported by earlier versions of Excel. To check potential
compatibility problems in the active workbook, choose File
Info
Check For Issues
Check
Compatibility.
If you would like to use one of the older file formats as your default format, choose File
Option
and click the Save tab. Specify the default file format in the Save Files in This Format drop-down
list.
