Creating a bibliography
When you write a paper for a school course or for publication in
a journal, one of the most tedious and error-prone parts of the
work is keeping track of the sources and properly formatting
the citations and the bibliography. Word 2013 supplies tools
that help with those tasks.
You can insert a bibliography in your document at any time after
you insert at least one citation, or you can wait until the end
of the project. The bibliography can be updated at any time to
include added or modified citations. There are many different
styles of citation and bibliography, but most schools and pub-
lishers accept one of a handful of standard styles. Word 2013
can automatically format information to conform to the styles in
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 6th
edition (APA), The Chicago Manual of Style 15th edition (Chi-
cago), MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers 7th edition
(MLA), and Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and
Dissertations 6th edition (Turabian), among other styles.
As you write your paper, insert each citation directly in the text
and enter the information about its source. Word 2013 stores
that information, so you can easily use it later to cite the same
source again. If you don’t have all the information to complete
the citation, you can create a placeholder and fill it in later.
Choose a citation style
1 On the References tab, in the Citations & Bibliography group, click
the down-arrow next to the Style box. In the drop-down list that
appears, click the name of the style that you want to use.
The citation style you select is one of the factors in determining
which pieces of information are requested when you add a new
source. However, you can select a different citation style later; Word
will automatically change the formatting applied to the citations
and the bibliography.
