As explained before, since R 2 is not close to 1, you cannot use the regression line
to forecast accurately purchase as a function of income. The forecast model would be
trustworthy as a forecast tool if the R 2 was above 0.8.
APPENDIX: USING THE CHART FEATURE TO CREATE A TREND LINE IN
EXCEL 2003 AND MAC EXCEL 2011
Excel 2003
In the Chapter 12 file, use the data in the sheet called Regression to create an XY
scatter chart. Select the data B1:C11, click on the Chart Wizard, and select
XY (scatter). Or use the Insert menu
.
Chart, and the Wizard will pop up. See
Figure 12.10.
On the XY chart you just created, right-click any of the points and in the drop-
down menu, choose Add Trend line. Click on the Options tab in the Add Trend line
menu. Check the boxes for Display equation on the chart and Display R-squared
value on chart. See Figure 12.11.
Mac Excel 2011
In the Chapter 12 file, use the data in the sheet called Regression to create an XY
scatter chart. Select the data B1:C11, click on the Charts Ribbon, and select Scatter.
See Figure 12.12.
On the Scatter chart you just created:
1. Right-click any of the points and in the drop-down menu, choose Add Trend
line.
2. Click on the Options tab in the Add Trend line menu.
3. Check the boxes for Display equation on the chart and Display R-squared value
on chart See Figure 12.13.
