2. In the message area, type This test was successful!
3. Click the Send button on the toolbar. Note that Susan’s name (or your name) now appears
in the Contacts list. The name was automatically added to the Address Book. You will learn
more about the Address Book later in this session.
Trouble? If the Contacts list is not displayed in your Outlook Express window, click Tools
on the menu bar, click Layout to open the Window Layout Properties dialog box, click the
Contacts check box to select it, and then click the OK button. The Contacts list should
appear in the lower-left corner of the window under the Folders list.
Deleting E-mail Messages
After you read and respond to your messages, you should delete any message that you no
longer need. To delete a message, simply click the message in the message list, and then
click the Delete button on the toolbar. When you delete a message, it moves to the
Deleted Items folder. This folder might be set up to “empty” its contents automatically
when you exit the program; if not, you should empty it periodically. Emptying the con-
tents of the Deleted Items folder permanently removes those items from your computer. To
empty the Deleted Items folder, right-click the Deleted Items folder in the Folders list,
click Empty ‘Deleted Items’ Folder on the shortcut menu, and then click the Yes button to
confirm the deletion. You can move a deleted message from the Deleted Items folder to
another folder if you don’t want the message permanently deleted; however, once the
Deleted Items folder is emptied, the message no longer exists.
You are done practicing sending and replying to messages, so you can delete the test
message you sent to yourself.
To delete the Test e-mail message:
1. Click Test in the message list, and then click the Delete button on the toolbar.
The message list no longer displays the Test message.
Adding Contacts to the Address Book
You can use the Address Book to keep track of all the people and organizations with
which you correspond electronically. In addition to storing e-mail addresses, you can
keep all related information about your contacts in the Address Book. You can enter home
addresses, home phone numbers, business addresses, business phone numbers, and per-
sonal information, such as anniversaries and birthdays.
To retrieve a contact’s information quickly and easily, you can give the contact a
nickname , a shortened version of the individual’s name. You enter the nickname as the
recipient and the correct e-mail address is automatically entered. You can also select
the “Automatically put people I reply to in my Address Book” option on the Send tab in
the Options dialog box so contacts are automatically added when you reply to a message.
