Case Problem 1

Businesses on the Web Business Web sites range from very simple informational sites to
comprehensive sites that offer information about a firm’s products or services, history, cur-
rent employment openings, and finances. An increasing number of businesses offer prod-
ucts or services for sale on their Web sites. You just started a position on the public
relations staff of Value City Central, a large retail chain of television and appliance stores.
Your first assignment is to research and report on the types of information that other large
firms offer on their Web sites.

research several
business Web sites.
Complete the following:
1. Start your Web browser, go to the New Perspectives Student Union Web page
( http://www.course.com/NewPerspectives/studentunion/) , cl ick the Microsoft Office
2003 link, click the Microsoft Office 2003 First Course link, click the Browser and E-
mail Basics link, and then click the Case Problems link.
2. Use the Case Problem 1 hyperlinks to open the business sites on that page.
3. Choose three business sites that you believe would be most relevant to your
assignment.
4. Print the home page for each Web site that you have chosen.
5. Select one site that you feel does the best job in each of the following five categories:
overall presentation of the corporate image, description of featured products or ser-
vices, presentation of the history or background of the firm, description of employ-
ment opportunities, and presentation of financial statements or other financial
information about the company.
6. Prepare a report that includes one paragraph describing why you believe each of the
sites you identified in the preceding step did the best job. Save your report in the
BEB\Cases folder provided with your Data Files.
7. Close your Web browser and your Internet connection, if necessary.

Columbus Suburban Area Council The Columbus Suburban Area Council is a charitable
organization devoted to maintaining and improving the general welfare of people living in
the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. As the director of the council, you are interested in
encouraging donations and other support from local citizens and would like to stay
informed of grant opportunities that might benefit the council. You are especially inter-
ested in developing an informative and attractive presence on the Web.
