To display nonprinting characters:
1. Click the Show/Hide ¶ button on the Standard toolbar. A paragraph mark (¶) appears
at the top of the Document window. Your screen should now match Figure 1-7.
Trouble? If the Show/Hide ¶ button was already highlighted before you clicked it, you
have now deactivated it. Click the Show/Hide ¶ button a second time to select it.
To make sure your window always matches the figures in these tutorials, remember to
complete the checklist in Figure 1-8 each time you sit down at the computer.

Now that you have planned your letter, opened Word, identified screen elements, and
adjusted settings, you are ready to begin typing a letter.
Beginning a Letter
You’re ready to begin typing Megan’s letter to Nicholas Brower at Web Time Productions.
Figure 1-9 shows the completed letter printed on company letterhead. You will create this
letter by completing the steps in this tutorial.
