To apply a fill color to the column titles:
1. Select the nonadjacent range A6:E6;A22:H22 .
2. Click the Fill Color button list arrow
on the Formatting toolbar. The color palette
appears.
3. Position the pointer over the Light Yellow square (fifth row, third column from the left) on
the color palette, as shown in Figure 3-17.

4. Click the Light Yellow square to apply the color to the selected range, and then click any
cell to deselect the range and to see the applied color. The column titles now have light-
yellow backgrounds.
Joan would also like to investigate whether you can apply a pattern to the fill back-
ground. Excel supports 18 different fill patterns. To create and apply a fill pattern, you
have to open the Format Cells dialog box.
To apply a fill pattern to the column titles:
1. Select the nonadjacent range A6:E6;A22:H22 .
2. Click Format on the menu bar, click Cells to open the Format Cells dialog box, and then
click the Patterns tab to display the options provided.
3. Click the Pattern list arrow to display a gallery of patterns and a palette of colors that you
can apply to the selected pattern. The default pattern color is black. First, you will choose a
crosshatch pattern, which is a pattern using crossed diagonal lines.
4. Click the 50% Gray pattern (first row, third column) in the pattern gallery, as shown in
Figure 3-18.
