Session 3.2
Merging Cells into One Cell
Joan has several other formatting changes that she would like you to make to the Sales
worksheet. She wants you to format the titles for the two tables in her report so that they
are centered in a bold font above the tables. You could do this by centering the cell title
across a cell range, as you did for the title in the last session. Another way is to merge
several cells into one cell and then center the contents of that single cell. Merging a
range of cells into a single cell removes all of the selected cells from the worksheet,
except the cell in the upper-left corner of the range. Any content in the other cells of the
range is deleted. To merge a range of cells into a single cell, you can use the Merge cells
check box on the Alignment tab in the Format Cells dialog box or click the Merge and
Center button on the Formatting toolbar.
To merge and center the cell ranges containing the table titles:
1. If you took a break after the previous session, make sure that Excel is running and that the
Sales2 workbook is open.
2. In the Sales worksheet, select the range A5:E5 .
3. Click the Merge and Center button on the Formatting toolbar. The cells in the range
A5:E5 are merged into a single cell whose cell reference is A5. The text in the merged cell
is centered as well.
4. Click the Bold button
on the Formatting toolbar.
5. Select the range A21:H21 , click the Merge and Center button
on the Formatting toolbar,
and then click the Bold button
on the Formatting toolbar.
6. Click cell A1 to deselect the range. Figure 3-20 shows the merged and centered table titles.

To split a merged cell back into individual cells, regardless of the method you used to
merge the cells, you select the merged cell and then click the Merge and Center button
again. You can also merge and unmerge cells using the Alignment tab in the Format Cells
dialog box.
