What is the purpose
of the parentheses in
the function?
The AVERAGE function requires that the argument (in this case, the range B4:B12) be included
within parentheses following the function name. Excel automatically appends the right
parenthesis to complete the AVERAGE function when you tap or click the Enter box or press
the ENTER key.

To Copy a Range of Cells Across Columns to an Adjacent Range
Using the Fill Handle
The next step is to copy the AVERAGE, MAX, and MIN functions in the range
B14:B16 to the adjacent range C14:I16. The following steps use the fill handle to copy
the functions.

Select the source range from which to copy the functions, in this case B14:B16.

Drag the fill handle in the lower-right corner of the selected range through cell I16 to
copy the three functions to the selected range.
