To Run an App Using the Search Box
The following steps, which assume Windows is running, use the Search box to run Excel based on a typical
installation; however, you would follow similar steps to run any app. Why? Sometimes an app does not appear on the
Start screen, so you can nd it quickly by searching. You may need to ask your instructor how to run apps for your
computer. If you are using Windows 7, skip these steps and instead perform the steps in the yellow box that
immediately follows these Windows 8 steps.

Swipe in from the right edge of
the screen or point to the
upperright corner of the screen to
display the Charms bar (Figure 69).

Tap or click the Search charm on the Charms bar to display the Search menu (Figure 70).

Type Excel 2013 as the search text in the Search box and watch the search results appear in the Apps list (Figure 71).
Do I need to type the complete app name or use correct capitalization?
No, you need to type just enough characters of the app name for it to appear in the Apps list. For example, you
may be able to type Excel or excel, instead of Excel 2013.
