File Explorer provides a means to create a blank Excel workbook without running an office app. The
following steps use File Explorer to create a blank Excel workbook. Why? Sometimes you might need to create
a blank workbook and then return to it later for editing. If you are using Windows 7, skip these steps and instead
perform the steps in the yellow box that immediately follows these Windows 8 steps.

Double-tap or double-click the File Explorer app button on the taskbar to make the folder window the active window.
If necessary, double-tap or
doubleclick the Documents library in the
navigation pane to expand the
Documents library.
If necessary, double-tap or
doubleclick the My Documents folder in the
navigation pane to expand the My
Documents folder.
If necessary, double-tap or
doubleclick your class folder (CIS 101, in
this case) in the navigation pane to
expand the folder.
Tap or click the Excel folder in
the navigation pane to display its
contents in the le list.
With the Excel folder selected,
press and hold or right-click
an open area in the le list to
display a shortcut menu.
Tap or point to New on the
shortcut menu to display the New
submenu (Figure 79).
