Renaming, Moving, and Deleting Files
Earlier in this chapter, you learned how to organize les in folders, which is part of
a process known as le management . The following sections cover additional le
management topics, including renaming, moving, and deleting les.

To Rename a File
In some circumstances, you may want to change the name of, or rename, a le or a folder. Why? You may
want to distinguish a le in one folder or drive from a copy of a similar le, or you may decide to rename a le to better
identify its contents. The folder shown in Figure 68 on page OFF 40 contains the Excel workbook, Inverstonit
Electronics. The following steps change the name of the Inverstonit Electronics le in the Excel folder to
Inverstonit Electronics Worksheet. If you are using Windows 7, skip these steps and instead perform the steps in
the yellow box that immediately follows these Windows 8 steps.

If necessary, tap or click the
File Explorer app button on
the taskbar to make the folder
window the active window.
If necessary, navigate to the
location of the le to be renamed
(in this case, the Excel folder in the
CIS 101 [or your class folder] folder
in the My Documents folder in the
Documents library) to display the
le(s) it contains in the le list.
Press and hold or right-click the
Inverstonit Electronics icon or
le name in the le list to select
the Inverstonit Electronics le
and display a shortcut menu
that presents a list of commands
related to les (Figure 85).

Tap or click Rename on the
shortcut menu to place the
current le name in a text box.
Type Inverstonit
Electronics Worksheet
in the text box and then press the
ENTER key (Figure 86).
Are any risks involved in renaming
les that are located on a hard disk?
If you inadvertently rename a
le that is associated with certain
apps, the apps may not be able to
nd the le and, therefore, may not run properly. Always use caution when renaming les.

Can I rename a le when it is open?
No, a le must be closed to change the le name.
Other Ways
1. Select le, press F2 , type new le name, press ENTER
2. Select le, tap or click Rename (Home tab | Organize group), type new le name, press ENTER
