Applying Custom Data Labels
Several of the examples in this chapter use custom data labels. You may have
discovered that Excel’s data label feature has a serious limitation: You can’t specify a
range of cells to be used as data labels for a chart series.
You can, of course, add data labels to a series and then select each data label and edit
it manually. A better approach is to use a VBA macro. The author’s JWalk Chart Tools
add-in (available on the companion CD-ROM) provides such a macro.

This chart is very similar to the previous example but has one additional twist: It
simulates gridlines by using X error bars for the XY series. The normal gridlines for
the column chart series are not displayed.
