Starting an Application
Tiles for the Ofﬁ ce 2013 programs appear on the Start screen.
3. Click the tile for the Ofﬁ ce 2013 application to start. The application opens on
the Windows desktop, usually displaying its Start screen by default.
Neither Outlook nor OneNote have an application Start screen, so you can start working immediately in them without
having to select or create a i le.
In Windows 8, you can sign on using two account types: a local account or a cloud-connected
Microsoft account. (Microsoft accounts can be set up to work with your Outlook.com,
Windows Live, G-mail account, or other e-mail account.) If you want to take full advantage
of an Ofﬁ ce application’s online, social, and collaboration features, sign on to Windows with
a Microsoft account. Then, the ﬁ rst time you start an Ofﬁ ce application, it will use your
Microsoft account as your Word account, and you should enter that account’s information
if prompted to activate the program. As described later in Chapter 39, “ Collaborating in the
Cloud with SkyDrive,” you also can sign in to your Ofﬁ ce applications with your Ofﬁ ce 365
sign-in information to access Ofﬁ ce 365 features.
